How to Know If We Are Ready for Our First Big Hike

Thinking about your first guided hike but not sure if you’re ready? You’re not alone. At Adventure Code we run beginner-friendly guided hikes across Merseyside, and this is the question we hear most. From people who have never hiked before, to people who used to be active but have not been out for a while. People who are fitter than they give themselves credit for. So here is our straight answer: you are probably more ready than you think.

The question is not really whether we are ready. It is whether we are willing to find out.

What Being Ready for a Beginner Hike Actually Means

Ready does not mean fit. It does not mean experienced. It does not mean owning the right kit or knowing how to read a map or having done anything like this before.

Ready means being willing to show up. To start. To accept that the first time is the hardest and do it anyway.

The fitness comes from doing it. The experience comes from doing it. The confidence comes from doing it. There is no version of getting ready for a hike that does not involve actually going on a hike.

It is not the mountain we conquer, but ourselves.

A Realistic Guide to Fitness for Beginner Hiking in Merseyside

If we can walk for 30 to 45 minutes without stopping, we can do a beginner hike. If we can manage a couple of hours of walking in a day, we can do most of what Adventure Code offers.

The things that catch people out are not usually fitness. They are:

  • Footwear. Blisters from the wrong shoes will end a hike faster than anything.
  • Hydration. Not drinking enough makes everything harder.
  • Pace. Going off too fast at the start is the classic beginner mistake.
  • Fuel. Not eating enough on a longer walk leads to that hollow emptied out feeling that is hard to recover from.

These are all fixable before we even set off. None of them are fitness.

The Mental Side of Your First Guided Hike

Here is what we have noticed, and we have taken a lot of people on their first hike across Merseyside, the Lake District and the Peak District. The mental barrier is almost always bigger than the physical one.

People arrive convinced they will not be able to keep up, that they will hold everyone back, that they are not the right kind of person for this. And then they do it. And they wonder what they were worried about.

Not because it is easy. Sometimes it is genuinely hard. But because hard is manageable, especially when we are not doing it alone.

The Only Way to Know for Sure

Come and find out. Seriously. That is the only real answer we can give.

Adventure Code welcomes complete beginners on every guided hike we run across Merseyside, Liverpool, the Lake District and the Peak District. We will take care of the route, the pace and the company. We just need people to show up.

Your first big hike is waiting. And so are we.
